Our Team

Dr. John Pate, B.Sc, D.D.S.

Dr. John Pate is the senior dentist at the Westwood and Starwood Dental and has been in practice for 40 years.

He came to Guelph after receiving both an Honours Degree in Chemistry and his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Western University. Following his graduation, he spent a wonderful year at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal as a General Practice Resident.

Professionally, Dr. Pate has been a member of both the Ontario and Canadian Dental Association since 1972 and has been a member of both Boards of Governors. He lectured on behalf of the ODA for 15 years providing Continuing Education in the area of Restorative Dentistry and Cosmetics. He also holds membership with the American Academy of Operative Dentistry and is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics.

John and his wife Leisa have 4 children and 3 grandchildren (all of whom are spectacularly cute). In his spare time, he loves to golf, has a private pilot license (float and IFR) and with the extra time remaining plays more golf.

Dr. Michael Bull D.D.S.

Dr. Michael Bull graduated from the New York College of Dentistry with his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2014. He also completed Double Major Bachelor Degree’s in Biochemistry and Medical Science.

Following his graduation, Dr. Bull worked at King's County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, where he performed a variety of dental services, including implant placement and restoration, endodontics, simple and surgical extractions, pediatric dentistry, and removable and fixed prosthetics.

Dr. Bull's hobbies include soccer, volleyball, and snowmobiling. Dr. Bull and his wife Julie have 3 children, Nora, James, and Audrey.

Dr. Steven E.Corber D.D.S., Cert. Perio. (Periodontist)

Dr. Steven Corber met Dr.Pate at McGill University in 1976. Dr.Corber graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery from McGill University and completed a general practise residency at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. He furthered his education in Seattle for three years and obtained his specialty degree in periodontics.

Dr. Corber has had an established, full-time practice in Toronto, on the northwest corner of Yonge and Lawrence, since 1980. Compassion, honesty and education are his pillars in providing oral health care. Oral health contributes to total health.

Dr.Corber has three children that reside in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto. Golf, photography and travelling are just some of Dr.Corber's passions. Oh,yes-also any electronic widget he can get his hands on!!

Dr. Young Chae, D.D.S

Dr. Chae completed his Bachelor of Genetics and Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Western Ontario in 2012. He has practiced in a variety of cities, including Hamilton, Sudbury, and Ottawa, before finally joining us in Guelph. His passion derives from building a positive relationship with patients that is based on trust, care, and professionalism. Further, he believes in making a positive influence in our community through acts of kindness and competency. Dr. Chae enjoys all aspects of dentistry, anywhere from implant surgeries to esthetic dentistry. Dr. Chae completed his 12-month training in implant dentistry at Ti-max Institute in Waterloo back in 2015. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Chae enjoys chess, golf, cooking, listening to inspirational speeches, and taking long walks with his wife, Sarah, and his daughter Arella.

Dr. Willie Cygelfarb, D.D.S.

Dr. Willie Cygelfarb graduated with his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Toronto. He was recognized with an award of excellence from the Canadian Dental Association for displaying the most outstanding qualities of leadership and character during his dental school journey. He prides himself in fostering genuine connections with his patients and believes that trust and compassion are the cornerstones of exceptional dental care. Dr. Cygelfarb is committed to staying at the forefront of dental advancements and continually immerses himself in the latest research and developments. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, spending time with his friends and family and is working towards his private pilots license. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Cygelfarb as the newest associate on our team!

Dr. Wenxin Miao, D.D.S.

Dr. Wenxin Miao earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Toronto, where she was awarded as the most outstanding student in clinical Restorative Dentistry. This achievement reflects her dedication to excellence and efficiency in patient care and satisfaction. Dr. Miao believes that trust and communication are key to quality dental care. Using an ethical and compassionate approach, she strives to foster a supportive environment where patients feel confident and comfortable throughout their treatments.

Outside of work, Dr. Miao loves hiking trails, discovering new restaurant, and shopping at Petsmart.

Be sure to ask her if she 's a dog or cat person!

She also volunteers by spending time with children and youth coming from a disadvantaged background.

She finds her volunteer work deeply rewarding and a meaningful way to stay connected to her community.

Jay (Denturist)

Jayaram Karunakaran is a licensed denturist and an active member of the Denturists Association of Ontario. Jay completed a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from India and started his career in dentistry in 2001. He worked as a dentist at the Armed Forces Hospital, Royal Army of Oman, for six years before he moved to Canada. His passion for prosthodontics inspired him to complete the Denturism Program and pursue his career as a denturist in Canada.

Laura (Office Manager)

Laura graduated from Wilfrid University in 2009 with a BA in Communication Studies and Psychology. After taking some time off school to travel, she returned to complete her diploma as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Laura has been in the dental field for the past 8 years and enjoys being able to learn something new and meet people every day.

Outside of work Laura enjoys spending time with her fiance Jasper and their 2 fur babies. She also enjoys concerts, swimming and hiking (especially with the pups).

Dental Hygienists (Dental Hygiene Team)

The hygiene team at Westwood and Starwood Dental consists of Liz, Terrilynn, Ursula, Emily, Jacqueline, Ciara and Hema they are all committed to providing their patients with a high standard of dental care. They assist their patients in achieving and maintaining optimal dental health. Our hygiene team is dedicated to continuing education, providing them with current knowledge and techniques which create a comprehensive hygiene experience for our patients. Together they show a strong commitment to and are dedicated to providing quality care that is both personalized and meets the hygienist standards of practice.

Front Desk Administration

Our long-standing administration team consists of Kathie, Lisa, Wilma, Sheri, Paige, Malgarita, Amanda and Kharina. You will be greeted by their smiling faces both at Westwood and Starwood Dental. They will be there to make all your anxieties about treatment, finances, and appointment scheduling go away. Their caring and supportive ways will help make your experience as pleasant as possible. Dental Assistant Team

At Westwood and Starwood Dental, our dynamic Dental Assistant Team consists of Rose, Fern, Michelle, Angel, Sofia and Sahaila. Their goal is to make sure every need of our patients is met in a caring, comfortable, and professional environment. They provide assistance to our Doctor's during all types of treatment, such as surgery, root canal/endodontics, implants, cosmetic and restorative dentistry, as well as children's dentistry.
